Resolution to Commemorate Mona Humphries Bailey
Whereas , Mona Humphries Bailey was a champion of students in Washington state for more than thirty years, serving as a teacher, a counselor, a principal, as Deputy Superintendent for Seattle Public Schools and as Assistant State Superintendent for the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction
Whereas , her active support of programs such as Washington MESA, the Institute of Educational Inquiry, the Pacific Science Center, the Seattle Art Museum, the United Way of King County, the Seattle YMCA, the Black Education Strategy Roundtable and others, helped to promote STEM education and equity and excellence for all students, particularly historically underserved students of color
Whereas , she served on the Washington State Board of Education from 2015 to 2018, where she provided principled and sound leadership on behalf of students
Whereas , she was an inspiring presence on our Board, who moved us, challenged us, and persuaded us with her intelligence, her integrity, and her wit
Whereas , the Board deeply appreciated her commitment, passion and vision to make our schools and educational offerings better in every way possible
Therefore, be it resolved that the Washington State Board of Education honors and commemorates member Mona Humphries Bailey. She is missed by us all and we won’t soon forget the imprint she left. We offer this resolution in recognition of her contributions to our Board and to our state.
