SBE to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Rules to Implement the 24-Credit Graduation Requirements

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education (SBE) will hold a public hearing on proposed rules to implement SB 6552 and consider adopting them at the July 9-10 board meeting in Spokane. The board will also review and consider approval of required action plans.

SB 6552 authorizes the 24-credit graduation requirement framework developed by the SBE, provides flexibility to school districts in meeting the instructional hour requirement, expands math and science course equivalencies for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, and eliminates the culminating project as a statewide graduation requirement.

The public hearing will be held on Wednesday, July 9 at 1:00 p.m. at ESD 101 in Spokane.

Your input is valuable to board members as they consider these rules for possible adoption.

Required Action Districts

At this meeting, the board will also review and consider approval of the required action plans from the recently identified Required Action Districts (RAD) - Marysville, Tacoma, Wellpinit, and Yakima school districts. Criteria for approval is outlined in statute, and includes the requirements that plans address the findings of the academic performance audit and describe changes to policies, practices, structures and agreements that are intended to increase student achievement.
