Senate and House Declarations: School Recognition

Release Date:

March 8, 2020

The House and Senate adopted these school recognition resolutions during the 2020 Legislative session:

  • HR 4667 – Observing school recognition week in Washington: April 27 - May 1, 2020.
  • SR 8691 – Honoring schools that have been recognized for exemplary performance.

Washington schools make great strides to improve outcomes for students by closing gaps and showing tremendous growth and achievement. This year, Washington will honor more than 400 schools for showing excellence in these areas. Help SBE, the EOGOAC, and OSPI celebrate these exemplary schools during Washington State School Recognition Week, April 27-May 1, 2020. Celebrate your school with a photo or quote from a student, teacher, or leader on social media with the hashtag #WASchoolsWeek and tag @WA_SBE and @waOSPI for a like or retweet!

How are schools identified?
The State Board of Education (SBE), the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC), and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) have re-imagined what it means to be a part of the Washington School Recognition Program (formerly the Washington Achievement Awards). Based on the Washington School Improvement Framework, schools are recognized more equitably for closing gaps, growth, and achievement. The framework considers multiple measures, including growth, achievement, and student success indicators like attendance and access to dual credit coursework.

We'll release this year's awardees in the coming weeks. You can find a list of last year's recipients here: State Recognized Schools.
