SBE Election FAQs
Eastern Region: Positions 1 and 2 (each four year terms) are elected from the Eastern Region, comprised of Adams, Asotin, Benton, Chelan, Columbia, Douglas, Ferry, Franklin, Garfield, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, Lincoln, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, Walla Walla, Whitman, and Yakima counties.
Western Region: Positions 3, 4, and 5 (each four year terms) are elected from the Western Region, comprised of Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Skamania, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, and Whatcom counties.
SBE public school members are elected by the public school district directors within the region they reside. The SBE private school member is elected by approved private schools.
A person is eligible to be a candidate for only one vacancy on the State Board of Education at a time.
Public School Candidates: must be a resident of the region represented by the position and meet the other qualifications established by RCW 28A.305.
If elected, a candidate cannot concurrently serve as a member of the SBE and as an employee of any school, college, university, or other educational institution, or any educational service district superintendent's office, or in the office of superintendent of public instruction, or as a member of the board of directors of either a common school district or a private school.
