The Board will also consider approving the appointment of a new Board member.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – At its August 10 meeting, the Washington State Board of Education will set "basic” and "proficient” cut scores for the new statewide mathematics assessment, the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP). Scores from the MSP will be released to the public on August 31.

State Board of Education Considers Required Action Rule for the State’s Persistently Lowest-Achieving Schools

ANACORTES, Wash. – At its July 13-14 meeting, the Washington State Board of Education will review and likely approve draft language of a new rule designed to intervene in some of the state’s persistently lowest-achieving schools. For the first time in state history, a select number of the persistently lowest-achieving schools and their districts will be required to develop and implement improvement plans under a new process called Required Action.

Students Celebrate the Arts in Statewide Video Contest

OLYMPIA, Wash. –Vashon Island High School and Oakland Bay Junior High School (Shelton) took first place in
their respective categories in the inaugural Washington State Board of Education student video contest.

The online video contest challenged students to create videos that defended the importance of arts education
in school. Videos were evaluated on multiple factors, including cinematography, creativity, and effectiveness in
showcasing student art.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Jared Costanzo, a sophomore at Chiawana High School in Pasco, is the new student representative to the Washington State Board of Education. Jared will begin his term with the Board on May 12-13 during the Board’s meeting in Spokane.

State Board of Education Announces New Leadership

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Jeff Vincent (Bainbridge Island) and Steve Dal Porto (Quincy) are the new Chair and Vice Chair of the Washington State Board of Education. The pair, elected independently during the Board’s March Board meeting at Highline Community College, will serve for at least two years in their respective roles.

The elections end the two-year terms of former Chair Mary Jean Ryan (Seattle) and former Vice Chair Warren Smith (Spanaway). Both will continue to serve on the Board.
