State Board of Education Welcomes New Student Board Member

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Madaleine Osmun, a sophomore at Mt. Spokane High School in Mead, is the new eastern Washington student representative to the Washington State Board of Education. She began her two-year term with the Board in May, and will be sworn in at the September 9-11, 2014 board meeting in Wenatchee.

Osmun’s appointment is the result of a competitive application process that culminated with interviews of potential candidates with a panel of students from the Washington Student Advisory Council (WASC).

Statewide Growth Data Publicly Available for First Time

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education (SBE) and Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) released the revised Achievement Index which identifies high-performing schools for recognition and low-performing schools for support.

SBE Adopts Resolution to Raise Awareness of School Discipline Concerns

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education (SBE) voted to adopt a discipline resolution at the March board meeting, affirming its commitment to improving school discipline practices in Washington.

The board pledges to collaborate with districts and communities to promote best practices, and explore incorporation of a discipline indicator in the Statewide Indicators of Educational System Health framework.

Kati Haycock weighs in on 24-Credit Graduation Requirement Framework bill

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Letters of support for Senate Bill 6552 are rolling in from across the state, and the nation, including one from Kati Haycock, President of The Education Trust in Washington, D.C.

SB 6552 would authorize the 24-credit graduation requirement framework, provide flexibility to school districts in meeting the 1,080 instructional hour requirement, and expand math and science course equivalencies for Career and Technical Education programs.

State Board of Education to Recognize 2014 Teacher of the Year, Hold Public Hearings

TUMWATER, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education (SBE) will recognize Washington’s 2014 Teacher of the Year Katie Brown, and hold two public hearings at the January 8-9 board meeting in Tumwater, at the New Market Skills Center.

SBE Announces New Elected and Appointed Board Members, New Leadership and Returning Members

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The State Board of Education welcomes three new board members, two returning members, and a new executive committee.

The new and returning board members will each serve a four-year term beginning January 13, 2014.

"These education professionals and leaders bring outstanding experience and insights that will help ensure a high-quality education for all our children,” said Governor Jay Inslee. "I’m excited about the contributions they will make to ensure greater success for Washington’s students.”
