Connie Fletcher (Issaquah) Selected to Fill State Board of Education Vacancy

Release Date:

September 1, 2009

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Connie Fletcher (Issaquah) was selected to the Washington State Board of Education on Monday, August 31.

Ms. Fletcher’s appointment fills a Board vacancy. She will join the Board as a voting member for its September 17-18 meeting at the Puget Sound Educational Service District Building.

Her selection as the newest Board member comes after a two-day interview process. The Board’s selection of Ms. Fletcher is a result of a unanimous vote of approval by the screening committee (composed of four sitting Board members).

Warren Smith, vice chair of the Board, is confident in Ms. Fletcher’s ability to contribute to the Board’s work. "We were fortunate to have five outstanding candidates apply,” said Mr. Smith, "but we can only pick one. Connie has all the attributes that we are looking for. She understands the impact of state policy on local districts.”

Ms. Fletcher’s decision to announce her candidacy for the Board vacancy is a direct reflection of her interest in statewide issues. "Increasingly, my attention has been directed to the state level,” said Ms. Fletcher. "The State Board of Education is involved in policy work that will have tremendous impact on local districts.”

Ms. Fletcher’s educational leadership experience includes sixteen years with the Issaquah School District and three years as president and officer of the Washington State School Directors Association.
