State Board of Education to Consider Submitting the Revised Achievement Index to U.S. Dept. of Education

Release Date:

July 8, 2013

SPOKANE, Wash. – At the July 10 - 11 meeting in Spokane, at the ESD 101 office, the Washington State Board of Education (SBE) will vote on submission of the Revised Achievement Index to the U.S. Department of Education (USED), and consider the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

After working iteratively since last July through a series of decisions relating to the redesign of the Achievement Index, the SBE will now vote on final submission of the redesign to USED. The submission of the Index is the first step in a multi-step process toward the development of an overall accountability framework as required by Senate Bill 5329.

The Board will also consider a few Index design rules, including new approaches to evaluating the performance of current and former English Language Learner students.

In addition, the SBE will engage in a panel discussion with representatives of science employers and educators about NGSS. Then the Board will consider whether NGSS are the right standards for Washington students and make a recommendation accordingly to the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The Board meeting will begin Wednesday, July 10, at 8:30 a.m.

The meeting agenda and materials are now available at: sbe.wa.gov/archived-board-meetings.

Time for public comment will be provided. The public and news media are invited to attend.
