State Board of Education to Adopt New State High School Graduation Requirements
TUMWATER, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education’s (SBE) November 9-10 meeting at the Tumwater New Market Skills Center will include a final review and adoption of new high school graduation requirements. SBE’s proposed revisions reflect input gathered from state superintendents, state and local school directors, administrators, teachers, parents, community and business members, and students.
The provisional graduation requirements are designed to prepare career and college-ready high school graduates.
The Washington State Legislature has the opportunity to act on SBE changes to the high school graduation requirements before SBE adopts its administrative rule. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction will conduct a fiscal analysis for how the proposed changes will affect school districts. Graduation requirements that have a fiscal impact change shall take effect only if formally authorized and funded by the Legislature. SBE is committed to no additional, unfunded mandates, and will develop its administrative rule based upon Legislative action in 2011.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

About the State Board of Education: The State Board of Education provides advocacy and strategic oversight of public education. The board is comprised of 16 members: five are elected by school board directors, seven are appointed by the Governor, two serve as student representatives, and one serves as a private school representative. The Superintendent of Public Instruction is also a member.
